Awal mula konsep growth mindset sedniri dikembangkan oleh tokoh psikolog bernama Carol Dweck. Carol Dweck membagi cara berpikir menjadi dua, yaitu Fixed Mindset dan Growth Mindset. Carol Dweck menciptakan sebuah buku yang berjudul Psychology of Success, disebutkan bahwa kunci kesuksesan adalah penerapan growth mindset pada setiap individu.
Growth mindset adalah pola pikir seseorang yang meyakini bahwa kemampuan atau bakat yang dimiliki sejak merupakan sebuah permulaan yang dapat berkembang melalui upaya, dedikasi dan pembelajaran berkelanjutan. Individu yang memiliki growth mindset akan meyakini bahwa segala kemampuan merupakan sesuatu yang dapat dibangun dan dikembangkan. Individu dengan growth mindset percaya bahwa mereka tidak terbatas pada kemampuan bawaan atau potensi awal mereka karena akan terus berkembang dan melalui latihan, ketekunan, dan upaya yang tepat dapat meningkatkan kinerja.
Seseorang yang memiliki growth mindset cenderung dapat menghadapi tantangan dan kegagalan dengan pikiran terbuka. Berikut adalah karakteristik individu yang memiliki growth mindset :

- Berhenti Memikirkan Validasi dari Orang Lain : Validasi dari orang lain sering kali dapat menghalangi pola pikir berkembang. Kembangkan penerimaan diri dan persetujuan diri.
